What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file that a site asks your browser to keep. On the next visit the browser hands it back, so the site can recognise the same device. Similar techniques — local storage and service workers — do much the same job with different plumbing, and this notice covers them all.
Categories we use
Strictly necessary
Needed for the site to work at all, so they are set without asking. They remember the answer you gave to the cookie banner, keep the language and layout consistent, and protect forms from abuse. Stored in your browser for up to 12 months. Without them the banner would reappear on every page.
Analytics
Optional. They count visits, tell us which reviews are read to the end and show where readers arrive from, always in aggregate. We do not use them to build a profile of an individual reader. Typical lifetime is up to 13 months, and declining them changes nothing about what you can read.
Advertising and marketing
Optional. Set by advertising partners whose placements may appear on the site, to limit how often the same creative is repeated and to measure whether a placement was seen. This category also covers the storage used by OneSignal to run our newsletter and browser notifications: a service worker registered at the site root, plus a subscription identifier and the tags attached to it — the site domain, the name you typed and the source of the sign-up. Those entries exist only after you submit the form or allow notifications, and they remain until you unsubscribe. Lifetimes here run up to 24 months.
Consent and how to change it
The banner on your first visit records your choice for the optional categories, and your answer is stored locally so we do not ask again. To change it later, clear the site data for funnoted.com in your browser and reload the page — the banner will appear again with a fresh choice.
Browser notifications are separate and always require an explicit permission from the browser itself. You can revoke that permission in your browser’s site settings for funnoted.com at any time, and you can leave the newsletter with the unsubscribe link at the foot of any message.
Turning cookies off in the browser
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies and Site settings.
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data.
- Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data.
- Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions.
Blocking everything is your right, though some parts of the site may then behave oddly — the cookie banner in particular cannot remember that you already answered it.
